Privacy

Can privacy truly exist in a digital world?

When you agree to be private on a social media account you aren’t keeping everything to yourself like you might think. Even some of supposedly the most tech savvy people in the world struggle with this.

I interviewed college students and asked them about their privacy settings, or lack thereof, on Facebook. When people think of gen-z they tend to think of the most technologically fluent people in the world. This is not the case. When interviewing my peers I found they do not know (or care to know) about the different privacy settings on Facebook. Going through the settings is not a hard task. It’s also not a task anyone is going out of their way to do.

Are social media empires going out of their way to keep people from going through privacy settings? I’m not sure how much it matters for them since they have all of our information anyways. Social media platforms not making privacy settings accessible is helpful for internet stalking. But is that really what we want?

  1. I completely agree with the points you made in this post! Especially with Facebook and other social media sites, college students, including myself, either don’t know or don’t care enough to learn about the privacy settings on these websites. I might have to start looking into the privacy settings on my social media accounts to see what they do with my information! Love this post and your blog!
